Pickles and colorectal cancer.
The association with pickles was examined in 3 Japanese cohorts.
Cancer risk: No association was found with colon, or rectal cancer risk (24).
Cancer mortality: Data about cancer mortality was provided by 2 cohorts. In one cohort, a significant protective effect against colon cancer mortality was
found among men, but not women (22). And in one cohort of very small size, a significant protective effect against total colorectal cancer mortality was found among men,
but not women (21). No associations were found with rectal cancer mortality (22).
Conclusion: Some significant protective effects against different mortality end points were found among men, but one cohort was of very small size. Evidence
is suggestive for a protective effect of pickles against colorectal cancer mortality among men.
